Distractions …

This past week I’ve had the sense that I, and others, need to be mindful of and watchful for distractions.

Some definitions of distraction are:

  • that which distracts, divides the attention, or prevents concentration
  • that which amuses, entertains, or diverts; amusement; entertainment

Distractions are not always bad or sinful, but they do keep us from focusing on the Lord and good that we need to be focused on.

Sometimes church or worship at church is a distraction because we get so focused on that that we forget why we are at church and whom we are worshiping.  Years ago I attended a church that had fantastic worship music and I loved it, but the Lord showed me that I was worshiping the worship and not worshiping Him.  Ouch!  I had allowed myself to become distracted.  I had allowed my attention to be drawn to something other than the Lord.

Another way of looking at it is this.  Imagine a dad coming home from a two week business trip and as he walks in the door his children come running up to him saying, “Daddy, daddy, what did you bring us!”  They then grab his gifts and run away leaving him standing there.  Are we allowing ourselves to be distracted by His Gifts, or are we staying focused on the Giver?

I pray for you and me that we would see distractions for what they are (often the enemy stealing our time/attention) and that we could realign our lives to be focused on Him.
